BEETHOVEN & BRAHMS | CONCERT ONE
Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 8 pm
Guelph Youth Music Centre Recital Hall
Penderecki String Quartet
with
Catherine Anderson (cello) & Colin Fox (actor)
The festival begins with the internationally-renowned Penderecki String Quartet. The quartet is joined by cellist Catherine Anderson and actor Colin Fox for an exciting presentation of The Kreutzer Project. The Kreutzer Project is a dramatic chamber concert inspired by the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy’s novella, The Kreutzer Sonata (named after Beethoven’s famous violin sonata). It brings to life not only the horrific sides to this story, but also the ironic dark humour therein. As Penderecki violinist Jeremy Bell describes, “The Kreutzer Project makes for a wonderfully entertaining evening. Colin Fox is amazing: he had the crowd in Toronto howling in their seats at things in the Tolstoy script that remain current and widely identifiable still today.”
