FAQs

What does the programme include?

36 weeks of 30 minutes private lessons (as the children become more advanced, the lesson times may increase) 24 group classes a Winter and a Spring Concert at the River Run Centre, and Solo Recital opportunities.

How much do the lessons cost?

The yearly fee is approximately $1100 and is paid in monthly installments.

How do we started?

We require you to observe five lessons before beginning. Then the parents attend an Introductory Period consisting of three weeks of meetings. See Intro Programme for more details. By sending in the application form, we know that you are interested in more details.

When are private lessons scheduled?

Lessons are scheduled at a mutually convenient time for both the parent and the teacher during the week days.

When are the best times for young children to have their lessons?

We highly recommend that young children come during the daytime for their lessons when their minds are ready to learn. After a long day at home, daycare, or school they are often very tired.

But I would prefer not to take my child out of school for lessons.

It is an Ontario Provincial law that children may be excused from school for up to a half day per week for music lessons. Music instruction is a vital part of their education. It teaches discipline, work habits and nurtures the artistic soul.

Where are the lessons held?

All lessons, groups and Solo Recitals are at the Guelph Youth Music Centre at 75 Cardigan Street. The large concerts in December and May are at the River Run Centre.

What are the expectations for the parent?

The parent is required to attend all lessons and groups and take note. They will also learn how to play the instrument (full sizes will be available for rent). The teacher teaches the parent to be the home teacher.

What if I don't wish to play?

All parents learn the basic skills required to play the violin, viola or cello. If after the first year you do not wish to continue that is fine, most parents do not continue. If you do wish to continue, we encourage you to obtain your own instrument.

Where do I find an instrument?

The teachers will size your child in the early fall and will guide you in the right direction to obtain an instrument. There are a few small size violins for rent in the School. All the small size cellos are rentals. The cost is $12/monthly for a violin and $20/monthly for a cello.

What about the adult size instruments?

There are enough rental violins, violas and cellos for all parents at the above rates.

How can I find out more about the School?

Please phone our answering machine at 821-2890 and we would be happy to return your call and talk with you further.
