Paule Barsalou (violin instructor & artistic director)

A native of Dunham, P.Q., Paule Barsalou holds a B.A. in Music Performance from Laval University (P.Q.) and an M.A. in Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy from the Cleveland Institute of Music (OH). Her main teachers and mentors have been Michele Higa George, Daphne Hughes, David Cerone, Kathleen Winkler and Gyorgy Terebesi.

Since 1989, she has been teaching at the Suzuki String School of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, and became the Artistic Director in 2004. She is a Suzuki teacher trainer approved byt the Suzuki Association of the Americas. This year she will be offering teacher training courses at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is a guest clinician at institutes and workshops throughout Canada and adjudicates at music festivals throughout Ontario. She is a member of the Guelph Chamber Orchestra and performs in solo and chamber music recitals on a regular basis. Ms. Barsalou is the director of the Southwestern Ontario Suzuki Institute held every August at Wilfrid Laurier University in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario. She lives in Guelph with her husband pianist Ken Gee.

Elspeth Lacy (violin instructor)

Originally from Ottawa, Elspeth Lacy holds a B.Mus in Violin Performance from the University of Toronto and a M.Mus in Violin Performance with an Emphasis in Suzuki Pedagogy from the Hartt School of Music. She received her Suzuki training from Linda Fiore while teaching with the Hartt Suzuki Program.

In 2005, Elspeth returned to Canada after spending three years performing with the New World Symphony in Florida. Highlights from her time with the NWS include residencies at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Rome’s National Academy of Saint Cecilia. She has also performed with the Britt Festival, Pacific Music Festival in Japan, Spoleto Festival USA, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Toronto Symphony.

Elspeth is a violinist with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.

Witold Swoboda (violin and viola instructor)

Witold Swoboda was educated at the High Schools of Music in Bielsko-Biala and Cracow, Poland. In 1980, he graduated from the Cracow Academy of Music with a Masters in Violin Performance. A member of the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra, Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra and as violinist and violist with the Ewa Demarczyk Ensemble, he has performed in many European countries, Cuba, Mexico, and the former U.S.S.R. Since 1981, he has lived with his family in Canada, where he has been a member of the Canadian String Quartet, concermaster of the Sault Symphony, Toronto Sinfonietta, Peterborough Symphony, Etobicoke Symphony, and Orchestra da Camera Toronto. He has performed numerous solo and chamber music recitals with his pianist wife Ewa, both in Europe and North America.

His teaching positions (violin and viola) have included Algoma University, Mohawk College, as well as Summer Music Camps and workshops in Canada, United States, England and Poland. Witold is the founder and artistic director of the International Chamber Music Workshop in Pulawy, Poland. He is co-founder of Accademia Musica, a very successful Suzuki program in Peterborough, Ontario. He is also a sought after clinician and adjudicator.

Beginning in the fall of 2003, the SSSG opened a branch programme in Cambridge. SSSG teacher, Joy Schuster will be teaching private lessons to young violinists in her home in the Galt area. Joy follows the teachings on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. The same School policies apply to the Cambridge students. Please refer to the Parent Manual for more information. First year children will also receive their group class there. However children past their first year of study will attend group classes in Guelph at the Guelph Youth Music Centre on Saturday mornings. All Cambridge violinists will participate in solo recitals and group concerts in Guelph.

Joy Schuster has extensive and varied teaching experience in Institutes, Suzuki programs, and private lessons since 1989. Joy also has a Master's degree in Suzuki Pedagogy and is a member of the Suzuki Association of Americas. Joy has performance experience in various symphonies and musical ensembles as violinist and violist and is a Suzuki parent to three boys.

Debbie Clark (violin and viola instructor)

Violinist Debbie Clark began her studies at the age of four in London, Ontario. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Toronto and a Master of Music from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her principal teachers include Patrick Burroughs, Geri Arnold, Dr. Robert Skelton, Mark Fewer, Annalee Patipatanakoon, David Zafer and Yehonatan Berick.

She has performed in solo master classes for Martin Beaver, James Ehnes, Ilya Gringolts,and Regis Pasquier. Her love of chamber music has led her to master classes with the Arthur-LeBlanc Quartet, Daedalus, St. Lawrence. Ying and Berlin Philharmonic String Quartets as well as the Gryphon Trio.

Debbie was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada for the 2000 and 2001 under Kazuyoshi Akiyama and Simon Streatfield, as well as the Japan-Hong Kong tour in 2002. She served as the Assistant Concertmaster of Orchestra Toronto for the 2004–2005 season. While in Michigan Debbie was a regular member of the Jackson and Battle Creek Symphony Orchestras. In Canada, Debbie has performed with both the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra London Canada.

Aside from performing, teaching has long played a role in Debbie's life. In addition to beginning her Suzuki Teacher Training at the American Suzuki Institute at Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and the South Carolina Suzuki Institute at Greenville, she has studied pedagogy with noted teachers Robert Culver at the University of Michigan and Mimi Zweig at Indiana University. Debbie was a member of the faculty at the Kincardine Summer Music Festival in 2003-2006, and a coach with the Side-By-Side Chamber Music program at the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts in 2007.

Elayne Ras (violin and viola instructor)

Elayne began Suzuki violin lessons at the age of 11 at the first Suzuki school in Toronto, after studying piano with her mother since age 5. Her early Suzuki teachers were Erica Davidson and Hazel Comer. During high school, she was an accompanist for many Suzuki classes, and achieved her Grade 9 piano, and Grade 10 violin certificates with the Royal Conservatory of Music. She attended the University of Western Ontario, and received her HBMus (Performance) studying with Lorand Fenyves, and her BA in Psychology (Child Development). Elayne has worked with many wonderful Suzuki teachers while pursuing teacher training, including Alice Joy Lewis, John Kendall, Margery Aber, Nancy Lokken, Becky Sandrok, and Brian Lewis, and in 2002 became a registered violin Teacher Trainer with the SAA. In 1984, Elayne began teaching in Huron County, Ontario, and in 1988 she founded the Huron String School when she moved to Goderich. The school offers violin, viola and cello instruction, orchestra, senior ensembles, group lessons, Theory/Music and Movement classes and has just added a Baby/Toddler class. Several of her students have been members of the London (Ontario) Youth Symphony. Elayne has been on the faculty at Institutes and Suzuki workshops across the US and Canada, and has adjudicated for music Festivals throughout Ontario. She is currently the Past Chair of the Suzuki Association of Ontario, presented a session on Rural Suzuki Teaching at the 2002 SAA conference in Minneapolis, and a session on a “Teen Mentoring Course” she developed with Paule Barsalou at the 2007 SAA Leadership Retreat. In addition, Elayne conducted a community Band of all ages in Goderich for 19 years, and is currently a member of the Stratford Civic Orchestra. In Sept of 2008, Elayne moved to Guelph, Ontario, where she now teaches part-time with the SSSG, continue to teach with the Huron String School.

David Evenchick (cello instructor)

David Evenchick has been head of the cello area of the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City, IA, for 10 years and has been Music Associate at Grinnell College since 2002. He has been in demand at workshops and summer institutes across North America as a teacher and Suzuki Association of the Americas approved teacher trainer. David is currently a Doctoral Candidate at The University of Iowa where he has been the resident cellist for The Center for New Music. He has been a member of The Cedar Rapids Symphony, The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, The Victoria Symphony, and The Prince George Symphony.

David was recently awarded the Anne T. Clearly Fellowship for International Doctoral research to pursue his research in Zagreb, Croatia. He will continue his study of the Croatian Cellist, Teacher and Composer, Rudolf Matz. David lives in Guelph with his wife Jennifer.

Amber Ghent (cello instructor)

Cellist Amber Ghent is a native of Petersburg, Ontario, where she began to learn Suzuki cello at age seven. She earned a B.Music in Honours Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University where she studied with Paul Pulford and members of the Penderecki String Quartet. Amber continued her studies in San Francisco with Bonnie Hampton, and in Cleveland, where she completed a M.Mus degree. While living in Ohio, Amber was the assistant principal of the Erie Philharmonic, and taught Suzuki Cello and theory at the Cleveland Music School Settlement.

In the fall of 2007, Amber joined the Madawaska String Quartet based in Toronto. She has performed with a variety of ensembles in Southwestern Ontario including the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Orchestra London, the Windsor Symphony, and Tapestry new Opera Works in Toronto. In the summer, she performs at the Bach and Beyond Early Music Festival in Fredonia, NY.

Amber enjoys giving workshops and teaching at summer festivals. She also teaches privately at her home in Kitchener where she lives with her husband Simon.

Associate Teachers

Caroline McDonald (rhythmic reading)

Caroline MacDonald studied music education at Wilfrid Laurier University and received her B.Ed from Queen’s University. She has completed her third level in Orff training as well as her second level in Kodaly training. Caroline was an elementary school teacher for 12 years with the Upper Grand District School Board teaching children from the ages of 5 through 12. She taught in the capacity of classroom teacher, teacher-librarian and music teacher.

Caroline resides in Guelph with her husband and 6 year old daughter—a second year viola student Caroline teaches the Rhythmic Reading Classes for the Guelph Suzuki String School on Saturday mornings.

Caroline co-owns Musikgarten of Guelph, teaching the Musikgarten program in group classes from birth to eight years old in her private studio and at the Guelph Montessori School.
