In this workshop,we will explore the technical and musical foundation that needs to be developed at the Book 7–9 level. Get ready for Scales, Shifting, Double Stops, Spiccato, Vibrato and more! Specific pieces that will be covered in great detail are:

Specific etudes that will be discussed will come from Sevcik, op. 8 (Shifting) and op. 9 (Double Stops); Dont, op. 37 International Galamian edition, Kreutzer International Galamian edition, Schradieck School of Violin Technique Bk. 1, and Flesch Scale Studies.

LINDA CASE is a Teacher Trainer for the SAA, as well as a certified Brain Gym instructor. She lives in Ithaca, New York where she is concertmaster of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and a featured performer in the orchestra's chamber music series. Linda has a private studio in Ithaca and also travels offering violin workshops as well as Brain Gym courses. Linda lived in Calgary from 1978–1983 where she was director of the Calgary Suzuki School, faculty member at Mount Royal Conservatory and a first violinist with the Calgary Philharmonic. She has adjudicated for many Kiwanis Festival competitions and is very familiar with the Canadian exam systems, competitions and festivals. With performance degrees from Indiana University and the University of Tennessee, her distiinguished teachers include Josef Gingold, Franco Gulli, Stephen Clapp and William Starr.

SPECIAL SEMINAR 1: More Tasty Morsels for Cello Group Lessons

A selection of solos, duets, and ensembles for different and mixed levels, and ideas for how to present them. Note: Some of this repertoire will be used with the children’s group classes during the Institute as well so interested teachers can observe Carey’s practical implementation.

CAREY BETH HOCKETT has taught extensively in North America and in Europe, and is particularly known for her work with groups of all sizes and at all levels. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music with a major in cello performance, Ms. Hockett joined the faculty of the Ithaca Talent Education School. In 1988, she joined the London (England) Suzuki Group. She is a past editor of the American Suzuki Journal, and member of the SAA and ISA cello committees, but has also done vast exploration of non-Suzuki cello repertoire. She served as consultant to the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music for their cello exam syllabi from 1992 to 2000. She taught in the Junior Department at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and is the founder and director of Corkybird Enterprizes, producers of Creative Designs for Music Education.

SPECIAL SEMINAR 2: The Joy of Music Reading

Carey will present a variety of games and activities for string players and pianists—some instrument-specific and some general, but all entertaining and enriching. EDMUND SPRUNGER has taught violin for over 20 years, including over 100 workshops and master classes throughout the USA and Canada, and is a registered Teacher Trainer with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. He has also presented sessions at numerous state, national, and international conferences.

Mr. Sprunger holds a BA in music from Goshen College, where he studied violin with Lon Sherer, and piano and piano pedagogy with Marvin Blickenstaff. Also trained as a psychotherapist, he holds a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan and has done post-degree training with the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Additional violin studies have been with Chihiro Kudo, Anna Martin, Reinaldo Couto (Alexander Technique and violin) and Kent Perry. He is Chair of the American String Teachers Association’s Committee on Studio Instruction, and has served on the Board of Directors of the SAA.

JOANNE MELVIN holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Carnegie-Mellon University, and Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in violin performance from East Carolina University. She is a violinist, Suzuki parent, church musician, and a teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience. She is a registered Teacher Trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and is a past Chairperson of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Joanne was Artistic Director of the Suzuki Talent Education Society in Calgary for 9 years. She has taught students from age 2 to 80, and from “pre-Twinkle” to advanced levels and has taught at many Suzuki Institutes throughout Canada and the USA.

ELAYNE RAS began Suzuki violin lessons at age 11 at Toronto’s first Suzuki school. She has an Honours BA in Music Performance and a BA in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. Elayne has worked with many wonderful Suzuki Teacher Trainers while pursuing teacher training, including Alice Joy Lewis, John Kendall, Margery Aber, Nancy Lokken, and Becky Sandrok.In 1984, Elayne began teaching in Huron County, and in 1988, she founded the Huron String School when she moved to Goderich. The School now serves over 75 students, (violin and cello), and includes a commuting teacher and a Theory Through Movement teacher on staff, a beginning Orchestra of the intermediate students, and a chamber group of the advanced students who perform with her at weddings and other special events. Several of her students have also been members of the London Youth Symphony.Elayne has been on the faculty at Institutes in Kansas, Waterloo and Manitoba, a clinician for Suzuki workshops in many communities, and has adjudicated at the Kiwanis Festivals in London and Brampton. She is currently the Chair of the Suzuki Association of Ontario.

CATHERINE WALKER, cello (Montreal, QC), received a Bachelor of Music degree (Performance Cello) from McGill University in Montreal, and continued her studies for a year in Geneva, Switzerland with Guy Fallot. Upon her return in 1975, she started her training in Suzuki pedagogy with Yvonne Tait. She now has a private studio in Montreal, Quebec, and is an active clinician, teaching at Institutes and workshops throughout Canada and the United States. Catherine has been a registered Teacher Trainer since 1983. Catherine served on the SAA cello board from 1984–88. In 1988, she went to Matsumoto, Japan, and spent six months working with Dr. Suzuki and the cello teachers there. From 1996–99, she served on the Board of Directors of the SAA, and during this time was also the Canadian representative to the International Suzuki Association.

In 1974, GAIL LANGE began her career as Suzuki piano teacher in Guelph, ON. Since becoming a Teacher Trainer in 1984, Gail has made it a point to observe outstanding teachers. She spent 4 months in Matsumoto working with Drs. Suzuki and Kataoka, short periods in studios of Doris Koppelman and Bruce Anderson, and observed Master Classes taught by Leon Fleisher in Toronto. She also studies periodically with James Anagnoson in Toronto.Gail has an active studio with students from ages 4 to 18; over the years her students have won many awards and distinctions. Many fine Ontario Suzuki teachers have trained in her studio, where she offers apprenticeship courses at all levels. Gail is Past-Chair of the Suzuki Association of Ontario and former piano director of SOSI. She is now a member of the board of the SAA.For her contributions in music education, Gail was awarded the Jubilee Medal commemorating the 50th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

MARILYN ANDERSEN holds the B.M. degree from Wheaton College (IL.) and the M.M. degree from Indiana University. She has taught the Suzuki method for piano in the Wheaton College Suzuki Program (Now Community School of the Arts)  since 1975 and maintains a large class there.  In 1986 Ms. Andersen traveled to Matsumoto, Japan to study under and observe the teaching of Dr. Haruko Kataoka and Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. She has taught at many Workshops and Institutes located at:  Stevens Point, WI.; Blue Lake, MI.; Anderson, IN.; Waterloo, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; Edmonton, Alberta; Houston, TX.; Fort Worth, TX.; Tulsa, OK., Kansas City, KS., etc.

For the past 25 years she has been chairman  and organizer of the Wheaton, IL. Piano Guild an organization which sponsors yearly piano exams for piano students of any method.  She is also an active member of the Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association. In the Community School of the Arts, Ms. Andersen has been the chairman of the annual Concerto Concert for the past 15 years, having many of her students perform concerti.

As an organist she has held various church organ jobs and was the organist for the Wheaton College West Suburban Choral Union for several years, performing Brahm’s Requiem and other oratorios.

Ms. Andersen is a registered Teacher Trainer of the Suzuki Method for piano and has done teaching training at several summer Institutes as well as teaching an ongoing teacher training class throughout the year.


Teacher Development registrants are also invited to attend the Student Institute's Piano Finale Concert on Friday at 4 pm, and the following String and Orchestra Finale Concert.
